Sharon Leaves

Sad news for me! Sharon left today for Los Estados Unidos, the US. She wasn´t very happy down here in the heat and humidity and spent much of her time in the air conditioned bedroom. We did go in the ocean and boogie board, and a few other things, but the heat was stifling.

Beautiful Tenacatita Beach

Tenacatita Beach on a perfect day.

Palapa restaurants line the beach. The large rocks in the background separate the bay from the ocean.

Water temperatures range from the 80's during the summer to a cool 67 deg. during the winter.

Air temperature during the winter can be as cool as 50 deg. at night, and warming to the mid-80's during the day.

Summer temperatures are much hotter getting up to the mid-90's during the day and mid 70's during the evening.

There is little to no humidity during the winter, but summers are known for moderate to high humidity.

Summer is the rainy season, with most rain coming as morning or evening thunderstorms.

Species Account: Magnificent Frigatebird

Anyone spending time along the Mexican coasts has likely encountered the Magnificent Frigatebird, or one of its relatives. These large, highly aerial birds can be seen floating high in the air above the shore (best seen as you lay on your back in a lounge chair, with a drink in hand). Frigatebirds are dark colored birds with long narrow wings and a long deeply forked tail (when opened); and a forked beak for catching fish, jellyfish, and crustaceans from the ocean surface. Frigatebirds have the lightest body weight in relation to wing area of any living bird, thus they can soar to great heights for long periods without settling on the ocean to rest. These aerial experts nest only every two years due to the slow growth of young, which first fly at about 6 months of age and then spend an additional 6-10 months with the parents learning to fly and catch food from the ocean.

Fish Story

One warm day, around noon, a young local Mexican came up the drive with his scooter, holding a fishing rod. This was a little strange because most Mexican surf fisherman don't have fishing rods, instead they use hand held fishing line.

The young guy walks down to the surf and begins casting his lure. I watched him for a few minutes, but soon got bored. I didn't think he would catch anything because it was to hot and bright to catch fish. After 15 minutes I glance up and see him fighting what seems like a big fish. As I watch he lands a 20 lb Jack!

At the same time the fish was landed, five young Mexican soldiers approach the fisherman. They all spoke for awhile, when suddenly two soldiers pick up the fish and walk down the beach carrying it. it was heavy enough for guys to carry it. The other soldiers followed behind.

Man, you wouldn't believe how fast I grabbed my fishing rod, put on a lure and walked quickly down the water. I took my casting position and when the waves were just right, I made a hard cast to get my lure beyond the breaking waves.

Next thing I know the front half of my fishing rod goes flying out into the surf. As I watched, frozen in place, to scared to chase the rod, a large wave caught the rod, broke the line and before I could move the upper half of my rod disappeared.

It was never seen again.

Fish story . . .

On one occassion I had a big Jack on the line. It dragged me way down the beach as we struggled for about 15 minutes. Then from nowhere a pelican flys in and lands right on my line. With the whole wide ocean it had landed right on my line when I have a big fish on.

For a minute I battled both the bird and fish. The pelican kept tyring to fly off, but was tangled in my fishing line and the tension kept it from breaking free. It struggled for a short period when from nowhere a flock of 6-9 pelicans flew in, hovered over the struggling pelican.

At that moment the tangled bird broke free and flew up to join the flock. They all calmly glided down the beach. The fish took off in a different direction and I took off for home.
